1 part lime juice
2 part brown sugar
3 part rum
4 part water
Pour 1 part lime juice in a bottle, add 2 parts brown sugar, 3 parts of barrel age rum, and 4 parts water. Throw in some limes to prevent Scurvy.
History of Grog
To prevent water from spoiling in the bottom of barrels on long journeys, alcohol was added to raise the water and keep it pure. Limes and lime juice was then added not only to help with the taste but mostly to help prevent Scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency in Vitamin C. Scurvy was a threat to sailors on long journeys where fruits and vegetables would perish. Grog was used to not only preserve water but to also give a long-lasting source of Vitamin C.
