Hello Hello Kitty: A Hello Kitty Cocktail Café Opens In Irvine, CA And It's Freaking Adorable

27 September, 2018

There have been a a few Hello Kitty Pop-ups and a fleeting exhibition or two of its kind before. But all thanks to Sanrio, California is now home to its first permanent Hello Kitty Café! The pink, pretty and promising venture is up and running and we’re sure you’d find it just as adorable as we did (if you can get in)!

Located at the Irvine Spectrum Center, the Hello Kitty Grand café is built on two intriguing concepts: a grab-and-go area out front and a reservations-only experience in The Bow Room. The grab-and-go area seats 12 and offers guests a selection of signature Hello Kitty Cafe treats plus limited-time seasonal offerings. Exclusive to the Grand Cafe are mini cakes inspired by different Sanrio characters and mini donuts, made fresh and served hot in flavors like cinnamon sugar and matcha. Visitors can also pick up exclusive merchandise including a gold bow handle mug and a handmade sequin bow headband. This front area is fairly minimalist and restrained, with clean white walls accented with embossed Hello Kitty-themed icons and art created exclusively for the Grand Cafe.

At 5PM The Bow Room converts into its cocktail bar experience, featuring drinks with a Hello Kitty twist. Menu highlights include You Had Me at Hello (cachaça, Aperol, lemon, sherry, pineapple), Dear Daniel (mezcal, pineapple, lime, spirulina, salted coconut whip) and 1974 (an Old Fashioned or Negroni served with a Hello Kitty ice cube). A curated wine list rounds out the beverage offerings with, yes, Hello Kitty brand sparkling rosé, Prosecco and pinot grigio.

The opening, as you would expect for an Insta-worthy eatery inspired by a beloved pop culture icon, was well-received. “We are thrilled with the fan response and happy to see so many enjoying the experience,” David Marchi, vice president of brand management and marketing at Sanrio, told me. Long, steady lines have been a constant since the Hello Kitty Grand Cafe’s September 14 opening and reservations for afternoon tea and cocktail service (28 seats) have been completely booked 30 days out, and as new slots open up at midnight they are quickly snatched up by fans. Social media posts from the cafe have created additional buzz.
