In recent marketing campaign’s, Mexican beer Tecate has been targeting budget-conscious, park-going, easy-drinking types. Their latest humorous advert has caused some news however. The above pro tree urination ad simply shows a picture of a tree with the word Baño (Bathroom) over it. Next to the picture is an image of Tecate with the words “Es Facil Ser Hombre Con Carácter” which roughly translates to “It is easy to be a man of character”. The entire ad is meant to be taking in jest by poking fun at some typical actions of your casual beer drinking. Tecate owner, Heineken, has even launched a few other campaigns for Tecate poking fun at another one of their beers, Dos Equis and the “Most Interesting Man in the World” gag.
This particular ad, however, was only meant for Mexico and somehow slipped through cracks and was distributed to San Francisco’s Mission District. A rep from Tecate’s marketing team writes in to say this was all a big mix-up:
“We have an internal process whereby every ad is reviewed for compliance with our local code for responsible commercial communication. As a part of that process, this ad concept was rejected by our US team but unfortunately, an error was made and the ad was mistakenly released and posted. We sincerely thank consumers for bringing this to our attention and have immediately removed the ad. We regret the error and are taking a look at our internal controls to ensure this does not happen again.”
Since then the billboard has been taken down.
