Yep, it is happening. Scottish Spirits Imports will soon be distributing their scotch whisky products in a can to the US. Each can will contain 12 ounces (about 8 shots) of 80 proof single grain scotch whisky which is distilled and aged for 3 years in oak barrels in Scotland. Scottish Spirits Imports plans to release the new cans on February 1st for $5 a can.
The idea of serving a high-end type liquer such as Scotch out of an aluminum can is a bit strange. Cans generally carry the stigma of low-quality, but Scottish Spirits Imports believes that convenience and ease-of-use will help these cans to flourish. The idea is that bringing along a few cans of scotch whiskey will be easier than bringing a bottle, glasses, and clean ice cubes. Despite the association with cheap beer and soda, aluminum cans actually work quite well for storing alcohol for their opaque nature, air-tight seal, protective inner lining, and of course reduced cost of manufacturing.
One expected problem critics are foreseeing is the non-resealable nature of a 12-ounce can, implying that the whole can would be consumed in one sitting. With the recent attention given to strong beverages such as FOUR Lokos, it is feared by some that this new can will go to support binge drinking and that 12 ounces may just be too much. However, Scottish Spirits Imports predicts that Scotch drinkers will know to take it slow since scotch is meant for sipping, not gulping.
