Facebook hopes to continue their efforts of monetizing their 1-billion user community by adding wine to the Facebook Gift Store. This section of Facebook allows you to send gifts to your friends and works hand in hand with Facebook’s birthday reminders. Shoppers will be able to choose from Robert Mondavi, Clos du Bois and Wild Horse, (all of which are owned by drinks giant Constellation) as well as smaller companies like Titus Vineyards.
“Social media is a hot issue in the wine industry right now, as we’re all trying to connect with the elusive Millenials, so what better way than to work with Facebook? It’s a huge exposure opportunity,” Titus’ sales and marketing director Christophe Smith told the Huffington Post.
Wines typically cost between $15 and $30. Once purchased, a notification is sent to your friend and once they accept, the wine is shipped to their door. US laws, however, limit the shipping availability to only states in which the wine in question is licensed. So depending on the wine only 17-30 states may be available.
“It’s working really well and we’re excited to see where it could go,” Dwight Harrington, operations director at Blackbird Vineyards.
