The diet drink is becoming more and more prominent. In fact, last year Skinny Girl showed the most growth in the market. But what side-effects come with these dieting alternatives? Turns out that drinks with artificial sweeteners are absorbed differently by your body, which may leave you drunker, quicker. This study that has been around from some time has started to surface again thanks to a wellness letter from the University of California, Berkeley.
The study found that the artificial sweeteners of these diet cocktails are absorbed faster than normal sugar. As these sweeteners are absorbed more quickly they leave behind concentrated alcohol in your stomach. Which can leave your drunker, faster and actually prove dangerous when drinking on an empty stomach. In short, you would get drunker, faster if you drank a rum and diet coke as apposed to a rum and coke. Researches found that even carbonated, no-calorie drinks like club soda can speed up alcohol absorption.
So if you plan on consuming those diet cocktails be sure to have something in your stomach, or plan on getting that buzz a whole lot quicker.
