Milk & Cookies? As Long As That Milk Is Beer

23 February, 2015

Stories about pairing Girl Scout cookies and beer have popping up for a couple years now, and the response is hit or miss with fans of the beer drinking world. Then in comes Firestone Walker Brewing Company and wipes the dividing line away with a cookie & beer pairing so perfect that the imitators will inevitably be close behind.

Firestone Walker’s Velvet Merlin oatmeal stout has been transformed into an "oh so" smooth mouthful known as Nitro Merlin Milk Stout—and it launches this week with a series of nationwide “Milk & Cookies” promotions in collaboration with Brown Butter Cookie Company.

First the milk…

Firestone Walker took their Velvet Merlin oatmeal stout, added in lactose, a.k.a. milk sugar, to the brewing process and transformed it into what is known as a “milk stout.” Velvet Merlin is an appealing dry oatmeal stout, however, when milk sugar is added to create Nitro Merlin Milk Stout, the astringent qualities of Velvet Merlin are counterbalanced - similar to adding cream to your dark roast coffee - and the result is smooth, rich dark beer that glides over your tongue.

Brewmaster Matt Brynildson and his team added another twist by producing this milk stout in the nitroformat. Nitro beers deliver a thick, creamy foam and an ultra-smooth mouthfeel—qualities that accentuate and enhance the classic milk stout character.

Then the cookies…

Sisters Traci and Christa Hozi opened their Brown Butter Cookie Company on California’s Central Coast in 2008. On the one hand, the Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookie is the essence of simplicity. Each cookie is hand rolled with just six ingredients: flour, butter, brown sugar, vanilla, baking soda and sea salt. But much like a brewmaster who can work magic with the basic ingredients of water, malted barley, hops and yeast, the sisters knocked it out of the park by creating a decadently wholesome cookie that stands out from the crowd.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company was founded on the Central Coast by two brothers-in-law on the strength of one flagship product, so you could say that we are kindred spirits to the Hozi sisters and Brown Butter Cookie Company. So when we started kicking around ideas for launching Nitro Merlin Milk Stout, a collaboration with Brown Butter Cookie Company seemed like a natural fit. “They have a great story and a great product that just happens to go perfectly with this new brew of ours,” says David Walker. “It was a no-brainer.”
