Dogfish Head Created The Certifiably Hoppiest Beer Ever Documented

23 February, 2015

Dogfish Head brewers are simply "envelope pushers" when it comes their beer concoctions. They are no strangers to hoppy brews. Most beer lovers can lay claim to enjoying their 120 minute IPA which packs in 120 IBU's (International Bittering Units). What Dogfish Head released on December 2nd just left their own 120 minute IBU fueled IPA in the dust and it's certifiable.

The newest creation, Hoo Lawd, breaks the IBU barrier with an astonishing 658 IBU's. To even test (and certify this number) White Labs Pure Yeast and Fermentation had to dilute the sample by 1:100 in order for the spectrophotometer to read the sample in the correct range. "It the highest IBU sample we have analyzed,” wrote Analytical Lab Manager Kara Taylor.

To achieve such an IBU number, Hoo Lawd is brewed with an experimental hop, HBC342, referred to as “Alpha Beast” along with Simcoe, Warrior and Amarillo hops in CO2 extract. While other uber hoppy beers have claimed to achieve higher theoretical IBUs, Hoo Lawd has received scientific confirmation and documentation from two independent labs that this is, in fact, the hoppiest commercial beer ever brewed.

“Hoo Lawd isn’t for everyone, but we’ve had a lot of fun and learned a lot about pushing the outer limits of hop dosing volumes and techniques with this experimental brew” states Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione.

Hoo Lawd, "affectionately named from the sensation you get after you take your first sip" according to Calagione, is currently only available at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in downtown Rehoboth Beach, DE while it lasts. The beer will also make an appearance at Extreme Beer Fest, held in Boston February 5 & 6 2016...
