6 American Craft Beers Con Estilo Mexicano (With Mexican Style)

05 May, 2016

Just in case you forgot your high school Spanish we'd thought we help out! This Cinco de Mayo the American craft beer world has some cool alternatives to the ol' trusty Corona, Dos Equis (and other great Mexican lagers, including Modelo) to party it up with tonight.

21st Amendment - El Sully

Brewed with a Mexican strain of a lager yeast, plus pilsner and Vienna malts and a bit of flaked maize. That’s pretty darn close to the ingredients a large Mexican brewery might use, and to us, it tastes the closest to what we expected: sweet corn and grainy flavors, a smooth mouthfeel and just a dab of bitterness at the swallow.

Deep Ellum - Neato Bandito

Deep Ellum brewed you a Czech-Inspired Mexican – Style Lager. A pilsner base with a touch of Munich Ten Malt and a “heaping’ helping” of corn.

Oskar Blues - Beerito

Beerito is a light bodied, amber Mexican lager brewed with premium German and coloRADo sourced craft malts and featuring a crisp accent from noble hops. The mouth feel is incredibly smooth with flavors of walnut, toasted bread, plum, honey and cocoa - 4% ABV doesn't always come with this kind of character.

Ska Brewing - Mexican Logger

The namesake beer of the Mexican Logger Superhero Carlos Javier—from Ska’s original comic book story and business plan. The body is light to medium, with fresh grain and sweet malt balancing a mild and pleasant bite from the Saaz hops, and a clean, crisp finish that is a perfect match for summer’s heat.

5.2% ABV

Upslope Brewing - Top Rope

Top Rope is brewed using the same recipe as Upslope's recently released Upslope Craft Lager, you could call it an alias. Big Red F (a Colorado restaurant group) tapped its relationship with Boulder's Upslope Brewing Company to come up with a Mexican-style lager that paired well with the food at its restaurants. The result of that collaboration is Top Rope, a light, low-alcohol lager with a Mexican wrestling theme that goes well with spicy dishes and even hotter summer days.

4.8% ABV

Coronado Brewing - Señor Saison

Brewed with agave nectar and jalapeño peppers, it combines a touch of spice with fruity esters derived from Belgian yeast. Like the brews of our cross-border amigos, this cerveza takes craft to new and interesting places.
